Happy New Years & Free Download

As we look to 2010 and close out this decade, can’t but think how much things have changed in 10 years.

10 years ago people were still using dial-up, there were no iphones to update twitter, upload a picture on facebook, and music was something you had to go to a store and buy.

The one thing that has not changed is peoples need and desire for music. Music is everywhere; accesible anytime, anywhere and we can download it instantly. With tools such as Shazam, Blip.fm, Twitter, Facebook……discovering new and old classics have never been easier.

I’m excited for this upcoming year, as we have some great releases lined up with Matt Prehn, Jazzy Eyewear, Leo Poertela, Tres Queros, Neighbour, Anthony Mansfield, Dave Allison, Leon Louder, Angel Alanis Grant Dell and more.

Wishing you all the best for 2010 and may it bring much joy and prosperity to you, your friends, and family!

Thanks for the Headtunes support over the years.

We leave you with a free download of New Wave Hookers by Brenden Wesley.

Home Sweet House

Its been a while since we dropped a little blog.....where did the time go? It's that time of year when everything is so hectic with the holidays....but that's no excuse.

We'll be better in 2010.

We recently stumbled on this great mini-documentary on Chicago House Music with interviews with DJ's, Dancers, Record Store owners and other people that helped build the Chicago House scene.

Home Sweet House by: John Pappas

From the site:

"Home Sweet House" reveals a thriving Chicago house scene hidden in plain sight. From a footworking battle on the South Side to a night out at a legendary North Side club, the film takes viewers to the city's most hallowed house hotspots. Interviews with DJs, promoters, producers, dancers, and record store clerks--all set to a soundtrack of authentic underground Chicago tracks--answer the ultimate question that surrounds this legendary subculture: Why Chicago?

DJ Z and FAKIR are the pioneers of house and techno culture in Serbia & Montenegro. They started as NOISE DESTRUCTION in 1992. Their first bootleg/single called "Laki is a Little Nervous" came out in 1993 and became a big hit in clubs throughout Europe. During this time they were responsible for building the scene in their country through their residencies in clubs, and appearances in national TV and RADIO shows and their shocking live acts throughout European Festivals.

Their first international recognition was through the German NEUFORM label with 3 singles, which came out during 1997-1998. In 1999 DJZ and FAKIR became residents for the biggest festival in Eastern Europe called Exit. After a 4-year break, the duo returned back to Exit Festival in June 2007 to open up for the CHEMICAL BROTHERS. They recently have release coming out on RELOOP and LAUS. Recently the duo started their own label called Boomerang Fish.

Audio Soul Project needs no introduction. A prolific producer, remixer and DJ, Chicago resident Mazi Namvar has appeared on over 200 records in 15 years time, creating music mainly as Audio Soul Project and working under a few other pseudonyms. A DJ for 18 years, Mazi has visited clubs like Fabric in London, Crystal in Istanbul, Q in Zürich, Avalon in Los Angeles, Masai in Varna, Level in Bahrain, Red Light in Paris and Simoon in Tokyo. His productions have appeared on OM, Ovum, NRK, Brique Rouge, Systematic, Dessous Recordings, and his own label Fresh Meat to name a few.

Christian Malloni is a fairly new producer on the scene working under the alias CPM and as half of The Candy Dealers with partner in crime Jay West. Christian has made quite a name for himself with releases on Agave, Flavor, Alphabet, Pilot, Onethirty, and Funkfield to name a few.

Pioneer CDJ-2000

So looks like Pioneer launched their new CDJ 2000 this week, which was about 4 years in the making.

Will it revolutionize the way DJ's play their music and carry their music? Well I guess we will be seeing less bulky record bags and see more USB sticks and SD cards being carried by DJ's.

At $2,100 a whack they are definetly not cheap. How long till this becomes the standard at most clubs. Only time will tell.

The new CDJ boasts the following features:
  • Multi Format Playback - The CDJ-2000 enables playback of MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF audio files on CD,DVD-ROM, SD card and USB memory devices.
  • Pro DJ Link - New Pioneer Pro DJ Link that enables up to four CDJ-2000/900s to beconnected and share a single music source.
  • 6.1” Full Color LCD panel and Graphic User Interface - For displaying song titles, jacket art as well as detailed track information and wave form display of each song so DJs can find informatio nneeded to select a song at a glance.
  • Needle Search - Helps DJs instantaneously get to a specific part of a song with a simple touch of the Needle Search pad.
  • MIDI - Users can assign various buttons of the CDJ-2000 to trigger other devices, such as DJ effecters and software with MIDI mapping capability.
  • Free Rekordbox Music Management Software Included - Both the CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900 turntables include rekordbox, Pioneer’s proprietary music management software that organizes and catalogs a DJ’s entire music library. When music files are imported to rekordbox, the software analyzes each file and prepares them for use specifically with thenew CDJ turntables.

Sleazy McQueen is no stranger to the dance scene with releases on Pilot, Eight-Tracks, Greenhouse, Chillin, House Arrest, and DAE. His tracks have been charted from everyone from Mark Farina, DJ Heather, Jimpster, and Prins Thomas to name a few. 2009 is looking like a big year for him with upcoming release on Banaza, Bearfunk, Hairy Claw, and Chillin.

DJ Cole Medina producer of legend and mystery has released music that house/disco djs the world over know and cherish on his own label, House Arrest, as well as American Standard, Hairy Claw and Internasjonal.

B-Team started out in 1997 doing funky house and breaks as the All Good Funk Alliance, they were signed to several labels including Toko, Aroma, Hi-Phen, Maxi and Dadhouse. Around 2000 they started a label called Funk Weapons and started to take on a different sound, which incorporated more of a funk and breaks sound. The B-Team is about taking the house groove one step closer to the funky goodness that P-Funk, Rick James and Prince built.

Nick Chacona has built quite a name for himself over the past few years. His 2003 release “Band Practice” was a sought after track that was played by the likes of DJ Harvey, Rub & Tug, and Prins Thomas. He’s had releases on labels such as 2020 Vision, Buzzin Fly, Bearfunk, and Prin’s Thomas’s Internasjonal. He also runs his own label, Hector Works with partner in crime Anthony Mansfield.

Press:

Our House Mag
“Quite a daring release for Boston’s Headtunes who so far have stayed close to more traditional deep and tech house. Never one to be constrained by boundaries, Sleazy McQueen turns in a slow-tempo dub cut, assisted by Q-Burns and DJ iTek on ragga vocals. Cole Medina and Nick Chacona provide the house versions with acid and techy rubs respectively but it’s actually the funky breaks version by B-Team which catches my ears most.”

DMC UPDATE
Sleazy McQueen Ft. DJ Itek & Q-Burns Abstract Message 'Big Times, Big Tings'
(Headtunes)
Prolific Sleazy takes a nice, hot bath in a billowing reggae-house groovescape, circled by dub efx and the odd masturbating gopher in fluorescent bikini briefs, topped by toasting and ragga rants. The Boston label makes it a strong package with funked remixes from Cole Medina, Nick Chacona and B-Team. This last one's a hoot as the chaps formerly known as All Good Funk Alliance strike up deep house drama before injecting acid and strings then - killer stroke - it turns into Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams'!

Mario Dujic 'Exceeding Joy EP'
(Headtunes Digital)

A Shame this is only digital but if it were vinyl it may well sport a throbbing rooster's stiffie, making place on the decks difficult. Lead cut 'Smile' is the kind of tuune which eases in subtly on pulsating groove action before building in glorious sonic plateaux, in this case with spiralling melodies and Mayday-style flickers bertraying 23-year-old Mario from Croatia's classical training. He also has a nifty way with jazz piano going on the flourishes littering 'From Above', while 'My Need Is You' is content with its sturdy organ groove (and delighted with the sublime remix from Taipei's Nosa Recordings supremo Sona). This is Mario's debut release: definitely a name to watch.

Kris Needs 4/5

Why thanks Kris. We got a stiffie as well when we heard it. I think I may have even conceived my child that night.

Look out for more great tunes on the way!

Exceeding Joy EP Feedback

HTD 005 - Mario Dujic - Exceeding Joy EP

Out Now at Stompy & Beatport!

Some Recent Feedback:

Tony Humphries - Beautifully done EP! Nice deep tracks, it will fit
well in our sets.

Murray Richardson - Liking Smile & My Need is You. Top stuff from Headtunes.

Patrick Turner - Wicked Freshness!

Special Interest - Loving the deepness here.

Andy (Inland Knights) - Really like My Need is You....

Jay West - Great stuff here, loving My Need is You!

Littlemen - Really like the vibe of this ep, put a smile on my face!

Giom - Nice little departure from Headtunes here! My favorite is My Need is You original.

Da Sunlounge - Nice deep gear here.

Luke McKeehan - Really great package all around. The Sona mix is killer, but I think Smile is the winner on this one. Full support.

Ross Couch -This sounds like a promising start to Mario's career. All 3 original tracks here are solid house music tracks leaning towards the more melodic end of the spectrum which suits me just fine. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for his future productions. Sona's remix fits in nicely, continuing the vibe but adding a slightly techier approach.

Deron Delgado (Stompy) -I really like Smile, and the deep, soulful, jazzy groove of From Above is top notch, and the moody vibe of Sona remix adds to a super package!!

DJ Disciple - lovin the 'smile' trac

Bryan Jones - Really cool EP. Never heard of this guy, but I really dig it. "From Above" is the standout cut to me, but they all sound pretty hot.

Miles Maeda - Pure uplifting house!

Joel Armstrong (Proton Radio) - crikey, one of the best EPs I've received this year!

Ray Colclough (beat 102 103 fm / Ireland) - Nice deep vibe on this.

Steve Arnell (Myhouse-Yourhouse) - Quality, Quality house music. I'm liking this new find!

Mario Dujic - Exceeding Joy EP making its promo rounds

Just in time for the WMC 2009, our new EP from Mario Dujic is making its promo rounds.

Mario Dujic
Exceeding Joy EP
Headtunes - HTD005
Out: March 23, 2009
on Stompy & Beatport

1: Smile
2: From Above
3: My Need Is You
4: My Need Is You (Sona Remix)

Headtunes Recordings again showcase their skill in unearthing new talent, this time with the first ever release from Mario Dujic, a 23 year old producer from Croatia. Three original deep, soulful and musical tracks, which give a slight nod to classic French house, are complemented by a remix from another relatively new name, Sona.

Based in Split, Croatia, Mario Dujic began his musical career at the age of 16 and was trained as a classical musician. In a similar vein to fellow Croatian Ilija Rudman, as Dujic developed he discovered dance music and now merges this with his background to create house music with a healthy dose of musicality and live instrumentation.

On remix duties is Sona, the man responsible for establishing Nosa Recordings, the first electronic dance music label in Taipei. Following the success of his release ‘Nowhere To Run’ on Pete Tong's Bedroom Bedlam label, Sona’s innovative production style and genre bending sounds have helped him to make steady waves in the industry, resulting in his music catching the attention of top jocks including John Acquaviva, Onionz, Carl Cox. His relationship with Headtunes began in early 2008 with the release of ‘The Bits & Pieces EP’. 2009 is shaping up nicely already; aside from this remix of Mario Dujic forthcoming projects include remixing including Alicia Keys' backing singer Rogiers and Intensity of Sound, alongside more original releases on his own imprint.

This 4 track EP will be available March 23, 2009 just in time for WMC.  Its definitely got a laid back deep house vibe perfect for all those fabulous pool parties in Miami.

You can preview a couple of the tracks on our myspace page

DJ & Radio feedback will be posted soon!

Obey Art Fraud!

This week the one and only Shepard Fairey comes to town with his urban art show to Boston's own Institute of Contemporary Art, dubbed the 20 year retorspective. It begins this Friday, February 6.

http://www.icaboston.org/about/news/fairey-obama/

I missed out on the VIP party this past Tuesday with Shepard's alias DJ Diabetic droping beats at Good Life. I guess these things happen.

But the man has been making headlines all over the place from his iconic Obama image that catpulted Obama's popularity in the Urban Markets! The AP alleges copyright infringement of Obama image that he used on his Obama HOPE poster.

Fair use or copyright infrigement is still up for debate.

Saturday Blast From The Past

It seems fitting that this week I throw the Prodigy's Charly out there for a couple of reasons. Firstly I was listening to Zane Lowes radio show and Liam and the boys were in the studio for a take over of Zane's show and basically played a bevvy of tunes that were as eclectic as anything. Yet the show was such that I couldn't pull myself away from it. "Charly" is still one of my favs from Prodigy and I can still remember sweating and grooving to it when I was a wee little clubber back in Limerick, when it first came out.
Another reason to throw this one at you this week is that the Prodigy have a new album out and while some have likened it to the early stuff, I am still on the fence. I definitely am not a fan of the first single, but who knows maybe it will grow on me...

This makes you want to party like its January 20, 2009!

The End of an era!

The club that was made famous by Layo Paskin & Richard West (aka Mr. C) will be coming to a close this weekend. The End has pushed the envelope for Londoners in terms of club life. Funky President!

Today history was made in the US with the 44th President.

I think this video shows the energy and hope our new President has brought to this country!

It was a remarkable day for everyone not only in the US, but around the world. America has come along way since the civil rights movement. Hopefully this will inspire people around the world, that change can happen.

Saturday Blast From The Past

I've been sitting around wasting my Saturday morning looking at the smorgasboard of videos on Youtube and want to share sme of the videos that blew my mind back in the day when I saw them for the first time.
The first is "The Box" by Orbital. If you don't know of Orbital, you should.. Get out and buy their entire discography today. I was lucky enough to see Orbital live, soon after I moved to Boston in the mid 90's at Avalon. Avalon has since been levelled and there is a new House of Blues going up there as I type.
Anyhow this tune is hypnotizing and is simply amazing in it's infectiousness...

Bass Experiment - Sick Note with Replika Dub out now on Beatport!

happy new year to all of you :)

We have a new single that dropped earlier this week.

Bass Experiment - Sick Note

Bass Experiment - Sick Note

1. Sick Note (original)
2. Sick Note (Replika's Take Me To The Nurse Dub)

Bass Experiment is the duo of Rich Sutcliffe and John Barber, hailing from Bournemouth on the UK's South Coast. As solo artists and as part of other collaborations the pair have released music on labels including Exun, Robsoul, Doubledown, D'lectable and BlackCrack, while also having tracks licensed to Carl Cox's 'Space Ibiza' and James Talk's 'Thinking Out Loud' compilations. Rich Sutcliffe also releases his own productions on his self-run label 'Jack The System' which has found its way into the record boxes of Derrick Carter, Phil Weeks, Johnny Fiasco and Justin Long over the past two years.

On Remix duty was Replika...he needs no intro as he did a slamming remix for us a whle back on Jay West's Make My Day and has a forthcoming original Brothers 4 Real on our sampler later this month!

It's out now exclusively on Beatport. Be hitting all other digi sites mid-Jan!
