Happy New Year - Our 2010 picks!

Another year chalked up in the books.  How was 2010 for all of you? There was no shortage of action in 2010 with the Olympics in Canada, Volcano eruptions in Europe, oil spills in the gulf, health care reform in the US, and a WMC shift in March that has all sorts of people taking sides.

Regardless of what happened in 2010, we at Headtunes are really looking forward to 2011, as we have some exciting new projects in the works and the fact that the first of the year will be: 1.1.11, this should mean good luck for all of us.

We thought we'd wrap up the year highlighting our top ten tracks, our favorite remix, and our favorite DJ mix of 2010.  There was definitely no shortage of quality tunes out there this year.  Seems like everybody and their mothers are doing edits this year and people are taking the BPM down a bit, but still killing it on the dance floor.  These are in no particular order, would have liked to have done a longer list....but this should suffice.

Happy New Year everyone!   Be safe where ever your party plans take you!

Top 10 tracks of 2010:

1.   Tensnake - Cat Coma (original) - Permanent Vacation
2.   Creatures of Habit - How We Lustre - Solar Disco
3.   ICube - Falling - Versatille France
4.   Agnes - Got to Be Strong - Ornate
5.   Toomy Disco - Age of the Jaguar - So Sound
6.   Bang Bang - Broken (Giom Remix) - Lost My Dog
7.   Audio Soul Project - Mnemosyne - Fresh Meat
8.   Hot Toddy - Down to Dub (Fred Everything Dub) - Smoke n' Mirrors
9.   Audiojack - Shakedown - 20:20 Vision
10. 2 Spare Astronauts - Oh Sheila - Whiskey Disco

Favorite  Remix:

T-Coy - Carino (Greg Wilson re-edit)

For most of the kids out there, the original came out long before they were walking, let alone dancing.....but this is a nod to the crew that started it all back in Manchester at the Hacienda.  Keeping it it true to its roots and adding a little of the GW stamp to the edit.

Favorite DJ Mix:

This was definitely the year of the podcast.  So many mixes out there, how do you have time to hear them all.  Some of our favorites have been the Fabric series over the years and RA's weekly podcast.  Maybe it one of the few last mixes of the year we listened to....or maybe because it full of surprising deep, indie dance tracks that are a little mellow and a little pulsating all at the same time.  Our favorite DJ mix of this year had to be RA 235 from Jozif

This mix is nothing but jams!  And we love our jams.  If you haven't downloaded it and its too late, well you slept on a good one.

Jozif is part of the Wolf + Lamb crew and we know those guys have had a stellar year in 2010 with all sorts of breakthroughs with Nicolas Jaar and the Soul Clap boys killing it out there.

Keep an eye out for Jozif....I am sure good things are in the works.

WMC changes the date?? Really?

So it's official WMC has moved their date up 2 weeks to have WMC 2011 from March 8 - 12, which happens to also be the week before SXSW.

Ultra Music Festival with 70,000+ attendees is still holding their date to happen the last week of March, not that we are fans of Ultra, but a lot of people are. Ultra is a little bit like the Wal-Mart for electronic music. It caters to the masses, but does not come with a cheap price. insert: "Welcome to Miami, trick!"

It seems like this might be the fuel SXSW needs to really create a better music conference with a variety of music and maybe even more electronic music acts.

There seems to be quite a backlash to this with party promoters and DJ's, who have all planned their events last week of March. Welcome to EDM politics.

I think Kaskade may have put it best.

But Energetick might be right on the money on this one: Opinion: screwed the pooch moving the dates. This was all that needed to take over the music scene as the premiere conference.

So what do you think about the date change? I for one think Austin might be a little lighter on the wallet then the price gouging that goes on in Miami during WMC. Over priced hotels, drink, and food, no thanks. May have to pass on this year and head down to the Lone Star state.

Is Boston popping off lately?

I am not sure if its something in the air, but there seems to be some great stuff that is happening in Boston as of late. Gone are the days of the megaclubs in Boston running nightlife and forcing garbage DJ's and even worse music down our throats.

Now there is a plethora of places to choose from more intimate venues to large 400+ rooms. This weekend alone we saw 2 great DJ's playing on a Sunday down the street from each other. It was great to see so many people out to support.

Kevin Saunderson @ the Middlesex

12" of Pleasure crew brought the one and only Kevin Saunderson to Middlesex for a night of good old fashion Detroit Techno and down the street at The Phoenix Landing, the Marz Entertainment crew brought in the always funky house queen from Chicago DJ Heather.

DJ Headther @ The Phoenix Landing

The acts seem to keep on coming. This weekend we see DJ Dan at Rise Nightclub (Boston's only after-hours club). If you have not seen the RA article on Boston yet, I would check it out. Great information on a scene that is often over looked.

Next weekend, Marz Entertainment is back at it with Headtunes to bring the inventor of the edit, Mr. Greg Wilson himself, with an opening set by Boston's own nu-disco don Brenden Wesley and the one and only Alex from Queens.

This will be Greg Wilson's debut to Boston.

For those that don't know much about Greg Wilson. He started his DJ career at the tender age of 15 and was an integral part of the 80's electro/disco scene in Manchester. He went on to release some of the first ever Re-edits, which were hand-crafted tape edits using reel to reel tapes and a razor. He has hundreds of these edits to his credit. He taught Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim) how to DJ and had a residence at the legendary Hacienda Nightclub in Manchester.

This is a true legend and pioneer in the world of dance music. So much can be said about the man. If you have never seen him live you are in for a real treat. He will have his famous reel-to-reel by his side.

Check out the links below for more info on him.

Early Doors at 9pm. Greg will be going on at 1030pm.

The Tech House Guvna is back!

Grant Dell's House Tribute EP out now!

Grant Dell - House Tribute EP

Headtunes Recordings welcomes Grant Dell back to the family, a full five years after he provided the Boston-based label’s first ever release ‘Love Tilt’. The EP set the label off, selling out of its vinyl pressing in just 2 weeks and launching Headtunes to a worldwide audience.

The Croydon based producer is a stalwart of the South London deep/tech house scene having developed his style in the shadow of Swag Records alongside the Wiggle posse of Terry Francis, Nathan Coles and Eddie Richards. Over the years his music has been a staple in the sets of DJs from John Digweed to Jay Tripwire, with releases on labels including Hooj Choons, Big Chief, Detour, 4Kenzo, Bosh and his own Pancake Recordings.

After prolific spell in the mid 2000’s, Grant Dell took a break from production but is now back and sounding like he hasn’t skipped a beat. ‘Kozak’ is a typically eerie, dirty tech-house bomb with a rolling bass and heavy drum kicks. ‘House Tribute’ is what it is, a bumping deep number nodding back to the genre’s roots and ‘Don’t Need Ya’ is another deep-tech number with a heavy “sahf lahndan” influences.

On remix duty is the legendary Angel Alanis from Chicago. With a 15 year discography covering every nuance of house, Angel is another true great from a city which churns out phenomenal house producers for fun. His re-touch of ‘Don’t Need Ya’ sees a hefty injection of that jacking Chi-town flare with wild horns sprinkled throughout.

DJ Feedback

Dave Seaman – Kozak is sleazy!

Tyler Stadius - Really great to see Grant again. Right back on fire! Dirty, funkified weapons here. :)

Nick Holder (DNH Records / NRK) – Wicked vibe!

Murray Richardson (Rebel Waltz) – Kozak rocks….great ep – HOUSE!

Abyss (Buzzin Fly) – Superb

Mark Bell / Blakkat (Shaboom) – The Original Tech House Guvna!

Lomas (Micron Club) – What an excellent e.p. Loving every track!

Raymundo Rodriquez (Jaded) – Feeling House Tribute & Angel’s remix.

DJ Heather (Blackcherry) – Diggin Angel’s re-touch

Moody B (Council House Recordings) - Its great to hear Grant Dell tracks again. Kozak is very west coast tribalation sounding- Like the tango, bluem and siesta stuff. Its nice to hear that sound again! Also really into "Don't need ya" very hypnotic, Will play both..

Tom Baker – Great all round EP! Kozak’s the one for me.

Satoshi Fumi - Love all trax! Really deep tech house : )

Al Bradley (3AM Recordings) - Grant Dell is something of a legend to me, his tech house from the early 00's was quite outstanding, so it's great to have him back. His three original cuts show nothing has been lost - Kozak being my pick, quite simply blistering tech house, amazing. Angel is also someone who always does the job & this is no exception, fantastic club music which hits the spot.

Chris Udoh – House Tribute is rocking!

Dibby Dougherty (Yello) - great stuff right here, House Tribute is right up my street, can see this molding straight into my sets

Funky Transport – AAAAH YEEEEAAAAAH! If I shut my eyes I’m in San Fran or The Midlands mid 90s! : )

Louis Hughes (1999 Recordings) – Proper!

Tres Gueros - Instead You Go - out now on 12"

Out Now on 12" blue colored wax! Available at Juno and Downtown 304

A1. Anthony Mansfield Remix
A2. Neighbour Remix
B1. Original
B2. SMQ Dub
B3. Dave Allison Remix
All tracks written and produced by Matt Brownell & Laurin Fedora. Vocal by Graham Holly. Back-up vocal by Gracie Fowler. Bass by Ray Sweeten. Guitar by Hugh Swaso. Instead You Go (original) has additional synthesizing by Beef Wellington. Mastered by Angel Alanis.

Tres Gueros are three white brooklynites led by the amorphous producer Sleazy McQueen. This collaboration as a whole has been a few years in the making with two vocalists, two guitar players and if that wasn’t enough, he brought in Beef Wellington for some additional synthesizing work.

This is a feel good indie-dance track that you will keep any crowd dancing We’ve got some great remixers on board from Nu-Disco gurus Anthony Mansfield who runs Hector Works with partner and crime Nick Chacona. Neighbour and his signature disco-house sound, along with newcomer Dave Allison who runs Kinjo Music. For good measure Sleazy McQueen has added a big room dub!

The digital exclusive tracks will include the Dave Allison stripped back slo mo instrumental and Leon Louder’s tech infused remix. The digital version will not be available for a few more weeks.

Feedback:

Mark Farina (GLA / OM) - 4/5 Da Funk!

Manuel Shagun (Candy Music) – 4/5 A good package for all tastes! I still don't know which i'm going to use on my mixes...

Joshua Heath - 5/5 flashback to the intro of gino soccio's 'dancer' and mash it up with a little feist, and youve got 'Instead You Go'. Cool vibes on this track for sure. Sleazy is really a cat you can always count on for solid unique production. All in all a very solid package, not one mix I don’t like.

Giom – 5/5 What a great release this is, with a great variety of mixes to choose from! Not sure which one to pick yet, but i really like the Neighbour mix and the Leon Louder one, can't wait to play these ones! Thanks guys, great work.

Murray Richardson (Rebel Waltz) - 5/5 anthony mansfield mix is a beauty!!!

Andy Riley (Inland Knights ) – 4/5 Neighbour mix for me.

KEN ECB (EAST COAST BOOGIEMEN) - 4/5 Love the instrumental from Dave, Nice slo mo!

Mondo Disco – 4/5 Dave Allison and Neighbour remixes are the ones for me! Solid, quirky production. Nice one.

Nick Chacona (XLR8R / Hector Works) - 4/5 Loving Anthony's Mix! Deep groovy fun!

George Cochrane (Prismatic Tracks) - 5/5 A sextastic slice of sleazy NYC neo-disco goodness. Really top stuff all around. Totally loving Anthony Mansfield, Neighbor, and SMQ's mixes.

Q-Burns Abstract Message (Eight-Tracks) - 4/5 Neighbour's remix is the best thing he's ever done, in my opinion. A serious staple of my sets.

Funky Transport (Club Snafu) - 4/5 loving it.... great vocal track! HUGE PACKAGE (thats what she said)

Da Sunlounge – 4/5 Nice EP!

Sleazy Beats - 5/5 Wonderful original and remix package. Especially love Dave Allison's contribution. Full Sleazy Beats support!

Raoul Belmans - 4/5 Cool nu-disco shit! Will play this for sure in my slow sets!

Pete Dafeet – 4/5 Love the Neighbour mix, and Sleazy's dub

Alive & Rejuvenated after WMC 2010

After finally getting back to reality....we thought we toss out some highlights of our recent trip to Miami for WMC. As you know, thousands of label owners, club owners, DJ's, promoters, and the who's who in the world of EDM music converged onto South Beach for the 25th Anniversary of WMC the week of March 22nd - 28th. Like all of them, the Headtunes crew went down there to collaborate on a party with co-conspirators Lost My Dog Records and So Sound Recordings, but also to bask in all things EDM for the week; meet old acquaintances, friends, make new contacts, and ultimately hear NEW music.

We arrived in Miami on Wednesday and headed straight to SOBE to grab some dinner with our friends Pete Dafeet, Najan Ward from Lost My Dog, Sleazy McQueen, Brenden Wesley and others. We even ran into our old friend Tim Xavier, who we haven't seen since he fled to Berlin.

Our first order of business was to get some food and get ready for the legendary Greg Wilson playing a 4 hours set at the Electric Pickle. What was he going to play? Was he going to play on reel-to-reel? What will the scene be like? These questions...ran through our heads as we entered the club to see Greg still setting up his equipment...guess we got there a little early.

But in the end it was all worth it. Yes he played reel-to-reel and what did he play...everything and anything. It’s Greg Wilson. For those that missed this night, Greg recorded the set.

ELECTRIC PICKLE MIAMI 24.03.10 (greg wilson live mix - tour 2010) by gregwilson

Kudos to all that were involved in the pickle that night with King Britt, Rich Medina, Vikter Duplaix upstairs and Aaron DAE and his boogie beats out on the patio.

Thursday we were up at it early to catch some sun and also bounce around to some numerous day parties. We had no set agenda, just time and money to burn. Well maybe not money to burn, but Miami does make you feel like that. A city that takes advantage of its guests: 'NO BUENO!'

What to do.... so we popped by the APT party to catch our friend and long time co-conspirator Sleazy McQueen rocking his signature indie-nu-disco sound. Then bounced over to Chillin party and got a sweet little bag from them. This came in handy for our flyers, water and other stuff we accumulated on our travels. The bags were hands-down the best WMC giveaway! I guess there's always next year for us.

After a little bopping around we head over to the rooftop at the Bentley to check out Crazy P in action. Set was great, but the sound was something else.

Note to promoters
...sound is what makes the party. Get it right!

Oh well...can't win them all.

So now time for dinner. At this point most of us our exhausted and thinking about calling it an early night. We end up the Catalina have some amazing burgers. After knocking back a few beers and a burger, we decided to meet a few friends for some drinks over at the Shore Club. As we were kicking back on their lounge beds in the courtyard...we began to hear music start piping out. We asked our waitress if the 25 years of Detroit party was happening in this area and she said...yes!

Who wouldn't want to see this line-up.

I guess this means we will not be getting no sleep anytime soon...Moodyman and Kyle Hall played the courtyard, with who's who in Detroit Techno in the main pool area.

This was a fun night as with some great music. I've been a huge fan of Moodyman for while now and it was great to see the man in action. We even ran into Richard West (aka Mr. C) and chatted with him about his new life in LA, pursuing is acting career and his new EP on Poker Flat with Adultnapper. If you haven't heard his new track.... check the video out below

For those not in attendance, we found a couple sets from that night from Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen.

Stacey Pullen Live @ Detroit Techno Celebrates 25 Years, Shore Club, Florida WMC - 25-03-2010 by R_co

Carl Craig Live @ Detroit Techno Celebrates 25 Years, Shore Club, Florida WMC - 25-03-2010 by R_co

If anybody finds the Kyle Hall set.... let us know. Would love to hear it again.

At about 2.... it was time to call it a night.

The next day was going to be a long one with our party happening from 9pm - 7am.

Friday we slept in a little then headed to the venue with Jazzy Eyewear, Fer Ferrari and the Lost My Dog crew to get the extra sound into the venue...When we got there, we were extremely excited about the location. It was nothing short of being dope. It felt like you were in airplane and even had a front end of plan inside with smoke machines and all!

The Plane...@skyline.
I can't see out of the cockpit!

After everything was said and done...we got everything set up by about 830 or so. The event was nothing short of exciting with great sets by everyone involved. Highlight for us was seeing Frank H Carter III go on. Boy oh Boy! That man had a voice like no other. So keep an eye out for this guy. He has a few upcoming releases coming out on Lost My Dog.

The room had a great vibe with all sort of heads rolling in and out. We recorded the night and will have pictures and sets up very soon.

Thanks to all that came out and supported us, we really appreciated it!

Friday wiped me out, by Saturday I decided.... it was time for me to go home. My only regret was not making it to the Aquabooty party on Saturday night. There will always be next year.

All in all...WMC 2010 was amazing. Saw some great acts, heard some great music and had a blast.

See you all next year!

Pete Dafeet this week in Boston @ Rebound @ the Phoenix Landing

Get ready for WMC 2010, with a Miami send-off.

Rebound in association with Headtunes are proud to bring you the first Boston appearance of:

Pete Dafeet (Lost My Dog / Southside Shuffle / Headtunes) London UK

with an opening set by local house veteran: Caseroc

Pete Dafeet

London-based Pete Dafeet is a deep house producer and co-owner of Lost My Dog Records, who started DJing in the late 90s and producing records in the early 00s.

Born in 1983, Pete's break came at the age of 20 when a demo CD caught the eye of Phat Phil Cooper, Yousef, and eventually Shaboom label manager Chris Hunter, who set Pete to work on remixes for the label. Pete has sold more than 20,000 records in the years since, releasing and remixing for labels including Robsoul, Bosh, Detour, and Toolroom—music that's been widely supported by DJs including Mark Farina, Danny Tenaglia, X-Press 2, and Laurent Garnier.

In 2005, Pete started Lost My Dog with friends Ian Straker and Najan Ward. Working with artists including Jay Tripwire, Fred Everything and Rhythm Plate, the trio have established Lost My Dog as one of the UK's leading and most respected deep house labels. DMC Update has described Lost My Dog as “a bastion of pure, deep house”—drawing comparisons with 2020 Vision and Classic Music Company—while iDJ magazine featured Lost My Dog as one of the "100 Reasons Why Dance Music Still Rules", hailing the label as one of the most exciting to emerge from the UK in recent times.

Pete's sideline is Southside Shuffle; a left-of-centre digital label, and a means to promote music from young, like-minded producers.

We will be teaming up with our friends from Lost My Dog and So Sound to bring you an incredible line-up on Friday, March26 at Skyline Lounge in SOBE!

Stay tuned for more info.

Our latest release from Matt Prehn has been getting some great reviews and feedback.
