Matt Prehn - We're All Funky EP out now!

We are super stoked on this new funky deep house EP that is out now exclusively at Beatport.

1. We’re All Funky
2. Boom Boom Bye
3. Boom Boom Bye (Leo Portela re-rub)
4. Boom Boom Bye (Jazzy Eyewear’s South Beach Mix)
All tracks written and produced by Matt Prehn. Additional remixes for Boom Boom Bye by Leo Portela and Fabian Giannattasio. Mastered by Angel Alanis.

South Africa is known for its numerous world class surf spots, but also happens to be a bubbling mecca for deep house music with numerous club nights and new upcoming labels, and DJ’s creating a dynamic scene in southern tip of Africa.

This brings us to Matt Prehn a member of the live band called Bang Bang out of Cape Town, South Africa. He’s had numerous releases on labels such as Onethirty, Shrewd Music, Myna, Agave, Candy Music, and most recently Eight-Tracks.

Matt makes his Headtunes debut with We’re All Funky EP, which includes two Matt originals. The EP is a funky throw-down starting with We’re All Funky. Boom Boom Bye keeps on the same tip with wild drums and a funked out bass line. On remix duty we have the Latin connection of Jazzy Eyewear and Leo Portela.

Jazzy Eyewear head honcho at So Sound has created unique style over the year that infuses funk, soul, jazzy samples, and pure house music bliss. He has releases on Aroma, Icon, Doubledown, Bunchlox, Nordic Trax, Siesta, and OAE.

Leo Portela has been experimenting with ambient, drum & bass, downtempo and house. His work has been releases on such diverse labels such as URL, Onethirty, Big Chief, Large and Fabric.

DJ Feedback:

Mark Farina – Lovely

Nacho Marco – Leo Portela mix for me

Al Bradley – Quality house groove a plenty here. Both originals tracks are indeed straight dancefloor bombs, no fussing about, just proper ass-shaking house. Jazzy’s mix is cool & very funky, but its Leo’s slightly siesta-esque rhythmic cut that works for me.

Rick Preston – Great Release! All 4 tracks are great.

Chris Udoh – The original is kind of quirky, but none the less funk. Liking a lot.

Joshua Heath – Good moody chugger in ‘we’re all funky’

Da Sunlounge – Very nice EP. We’re All Funky and Jazzy’s mix are my pick.

Atnarko – Nice EP, Jazzy mix for me.

Kirby – Jazzy and Leo mixes for me

The Littlemen – Diggin the original Boom Boom Bye and Jazzy’s mix!

Don Tinsley - Headtunes hits the spot again. Diggin all the mixes.

Anhanguera – Good EP. My Fav’s are Boom original and Jazzy’s remix. Deep and funky, just like we appreciate.

Jon Lemmon (Viva) - Great groovin’ house. Digging the jazzy Eyewear mix.

Jason Hodges – All around smooth ep, something here for the ladies.

Special Interest – Nice EP, really diggin jazzy’s mix.

Manuel Shagun - Solid release! Feeling happy seeing more argentinian house-heads together :)

Philadelphia Weekly

When you think of House Music, usually the first thing that pops in your head is either Chicago, or New York City. Boston is not a city that would roll off the lips at first, but now it shall! “We’re All Funky” is the 8th release off of Boston based, Headtunes Recordings, and they’ve put together 4 tracks of fun and funky house.

Matt Prehn, hailing from Cape Town South Africa, throws down some scratch samples, bubbling bass, and some funky percussion, while keeping the bounce at a maximum. “Boom Boom Bye” is built around a BIG bass, some great funky guitar riffs, and looped chords of Rhodes keys.

The stand out mix on this release comes from Miami’s Jazzy Eyewear. Jazzy is on the east coast, yet a majority of his productions sound like the early funky house that was founded in west coast producers, but with a new breath of this decades wants and need for funky house. His remix of “Boom Boom Bye” has intelligent progression through the production, using reverb in all the right places, and has pleasant transitions from lighter floating sounds to the jazz horns and funky guitars. The remix could find its home in an upbeat, upscale lounge, or in a deeper house dance floor. Headtunes has put together a package that definitely has put the funk into some deep house.

Deepsouth Audio

This hit my in box just before New Year and was played with devastating effect .. to a stomping crowd ..

This has well and truly been road tested, the 2 major mixes that slapped my dance floor around were the head line tune of We're all funky has phatt bassline licks with toe tapping rhythms .. seconded with a diamond remix by Jazzy Eyeware. The tune that stood out with great structure in my radio show was Boom Boom Bye with a remix by Leo Portela.

Smoking E.P if you know what’s going down this will be in your bag for the coming months. Nice One Head Tunes and look forward to 2010.

Boston based Headtunes Recordings return with some serious funk infused house fresh from Cape Town in South Africa courtesy of Matt Prehn.

Opening track We're All Funky bumps its way along with some cheeky organ melodies nice bongos and vocal snippets of 'funky'. A record that just seems to ooze fun. Try not to smile when listening to this!

Next up is Boom Boom Bye moving things into more deeper territory. Skippy snare drums dance around like a drunk trying to make his way home after a night out helped along by a funky marching bassline.

The Leo Portela Re-rub gives us more of a driving house tune but still keeps its funky dub roots while the Jazzy Eyewear mix takes things more soulful and dreamy.
